| Restoring a Golding Official No. 6 Printing Press
In the summer of 2008 the Silver Buckle Press brought together several students and library staff to help refurbish a 19th century tabletop platen printing press: a Golding Official No. 6.
Our goal was to get the press up and running and learn more about operating this clamshell style printing press. As well as setting type and printing, seminar students took two field trips to area printing museums.
The press was made in 1884 by Golding & Co. in Boston. It was part of the original Silver Buckle Press collection assembled by Mr. Robert Shaftoe. It had not been used for many years and mostly needed cleaning and lubrication. We purchased new rollers, and the seminar students installed them.
At the end of the seminar we held a public open house and visitors were invited to print a coaster using the newly refurbished press.
